International Day of Happiness 2021!

Today we are invited to appreciate the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

The United Nations designates specific days, weeks, years and decades as occasions to mark particular events or topics in order to promote, through awareness and action, the objectives of the Organisation. Usually, it is one of more Member States that propose these observances and the General Assembly establishes them with a resolution.

In 2012 the UN General Assembly elected the 20th of March as a the International Day of Happiness! This was initiated by Bhutan, a country which recognized the value of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adapted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product. In April 2012, more than 800 participants attended an influential High-level Meeting including political and government leaders, representatives of governments, international scholars, academics, and spiritual leaders from the world's major faiths. Deliberations carried on for 3 days in various formats.

March 20th is intended to recognise the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives. It acknowledges the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all people.
